Driving Change: Penny Engineering, Working Towards Sustainable Manufacturing, and Corporate Responsibility – Penny Engineering

Working Towards Sustainable Manufacturing

In today’s fast-paced and consumer-driven world, the need for sustainability has never been more critical. As environmental concerns grow, Penny Engineering recognises the importance of adopting eco-friendly practices that minimises our ecological footprint; working towards sustainable manufacturing for all of our processes.

We firmly believe that sustainability is not just an option; it’s a responsibility that lies at the heart of every business. As a leading provider of lifting and handling solutions, offering Vehicle Mounted Lifting EquipmentGoods LiftsLighting Winch SystemsNuclear Materials Handling Solutions, and more, we are committed to integrating sustainable practices into every aspect of our operations. Some of the many ways Penny Engineering have invested in sustainable practices include:

Landfill-Free Waste Management

Waste is a significant concern in all manufacturing processes. Penny Engineering has implemented advanced waste reduction strategies that minimise waste and, by careful material choices, maximises re-use and recycling efforts. We strive to achieve a circular economy where resources are used more efficiently.

Responsible Material Sourcing

We are devoted to sourcing raw materials and components from suppliers who share our commitment to sustainability. By collaborating with eco-conscious partners, we work together to drive down our greenhouse gas emissions and to be a benefit to the communities in which we operate.

Reuse and Recycling of Equipment

We manufacture equipment with longevity and whole-life sustainability in mind; creating equipment that is designed to be maintained – not replaced. Our vehicle mounted cranes are readily moved from one vehicle to the next and our goods lifts can be reconfigured to suit new premises as your business grows. This will always be a massive cost and carbon saving over buying new. However, should your equipment need decommissioning, Penny Engineering will bring it back to our facility, strip it, and recycle it.

Energy Efficiency

State-of-the-art insulation minimises heat loss from the factory and computer-controlled heating systems have reduced gas use by over 30%. Low-energy computers, variable-speed compressors, and LED lighting systems have significantly reduced our energy usage while maintaining high-quality production standards.

Solar-Powered Manufacturing Facilities

Ahead of the curve, our manufacturing facilities invested in solar panels back in 2014 in order to produce 50% of our own electricity and pass on the excess back to the national grid. Nearly a decade later, we are expanding the arrays to fuel Tesla cars with any shortfall sourced via a zero-carbon generator.

Supplier Sustainability

Penny Engineering recognises the importance of collaborating with sustainable suppliers, and our recent Supplier Sustainability Day exemplifies this. Designed to unite and network like-minded businesses and sectors, we aimed to share ideas on how we can collaborate to produce a more sustainable supply chain for the future, and encourage and support sustainable business practices in our local areas and further afield.

Corporate Social Responsibility

At Penny Engineering, our ethos of corporate responsibility extends beyond environmental stewardship. We believe in uplifting the communities in which we operate, empowering our employees, and fostering positive change in society. As a family business located in the heart of North Derbyshire, we take great pride in our heritage and are committed to making positive contributions of every shape and size to benefit our community. Some of the many ways we engage with our community include…

Community Engagement

We recognise the importance of being active contributors to the communities that support us. Through meaningful partnerships and philanthropic initiatives, such as corporate support for Ashgate Hospice, practical support for the local heritage group, the provision of sports kits for local football sides and being part of the Made in Chesterfield organisation and its celebration of all things engineering in the area.

Transparency and Ethics

Corporate responsibility means upholding the highest standards of transparency and ethical practices. We take pride in our commitment to integrity, fair trade, and responsible business conduct, building trust with our stakeholders and customers.

Education and Apprenticeships

Our commitment to both sustainability and positive social contribution are some of the many reasons why Penny Engineering thrives as a business. Dedicated to giving back to our community, our corporate social responsibility manifests in our links to local schools – providing work experience opportunities, mock interviews, and coaching. Over 10% of the workforce are apprentices at all levels up to master’s degree level and not just in engineering but in marketing and finance as well.
